This new downtown stadium requires a massive excavation and concrete structure to be constructed. These large structures often have concrete retaining walls that require backfill but are not strong enough to support the backfill until after the floor above is constructed. This leaves the contractor stuck so he ends up spending time and money bracing the temporary condition so he can get the backfill installed. Cellular concrete was used on this project to alleviate the lateral forces of the backfill and eliminate the need for bracing. Work was performed in the evenings so the other contractors were not impacted. Fill was placed 3′ per day at the instruction of the structural engineer so fluid forces while the 27 pcf cellular concrete were minimized. All lateral forces disappear after the cellular concrete sets.
