This project consisted of a lightweight fill located at the end of the elevated bridge section. The off ramp slopes downwards from a bridge that is approximately 20′ above grade, over a marsh down to the city streets. The area is well known for soft soils and settlement. Locals all remember a large dip in the freeway that settled for many years. Caltrans would occasionally fix with asphalt. When it was finally fixed there was nearly 12′ of asphalt to remove. This was permanently fixed by replacing the asphalt with cellular concrete. This project consisted of a 95′ long lightweight transition at the end of the ramp installed with the Caltrans specified 5.5″ surface steps. This surface is then buried in AB and pavement.
